Not Feeling Your Best Right Now? That's Okay.
Let’s be honest: pregnancy is not all rainbows and smiley faces all the time. Some women hate being pregnant- and that’s okay. You have a foreign being trying to make its home in your body and it can take its toll. Maybe you feel sick all the time. Maybe your belly is so big that when you bend over to tie your shoes, your dinner comes up. Maybe you haven’t felt your baby move yet and you are having a difficult time connecting the idea of being pregnant with the physicality of it. Or maybe you just don’t feel like yourself and wish that you could disconnect for a few moments. Let music help you do that!
Here is a 5-minute music exercise to help redirect your energy to a positive space:
Find a quiet place where you can comfortably relax and feel grounded
Turn on some quiet, soothing music (I really like Garth Stevenson’s album “Flying” for this practice. Southern Sea is my favorite)
Lie down if possible, close your eyes, and place your hands on your belly
Envision a warm blue light surrounding your baby- this represents relaxation, protection and peace
Take a deep breath in. Imagine the breath bringing love to your belly
Slowly let the breath go. You are letting go of your anxiety and feelings of uncertainty
Repeat 3 more times
Spend 1 minute focusing only on your breathing and the music. Let everything else fall away and feel how the music is grounding you and keeping you centered
Repeat: “I am calm. I am where I am supposed to be. My baby is loved. I am at peace.”
Slowly open your eyes and finish by taking 3 more breaths
Another way you can disconnect with music is to close your eyes and envision a favorite place that makes you feel relaxed and at peace. Focus on the music, and go through these same breathing techniques.
I really hope that this little exercise made you feel a little bit better, even just for 5 minutes! Be sure to check out my Instagram page @healingnotesmusictherapy for more of these quick music and relaxation tips!
