Creating A Special Bedtime Playlist During Pregnancy

Let’s talk about another way that you can use a playlist during pregnancy- this time for the purpose of creating a sense of quiet, calm connection with your baby every night before bed.

We know from research that the fetus begins hearing sounds from the outside world around 4 months, and around 6 or 7 months it can begin to “memorize” information such as simple melodies. Therefore, I recommend this activity to moms-to-be who are in their 2nd or 3rd trimester.

  • Choose 5-6 songs (keep it to something you know you can commit to every night when you’re tired and need your rest). The songs don’t need to be one specific genre but they should all be relaxing and speak to you on an emotional level- whatever works for you!

  • Assuming you’ve just climbed into bed and need to unwind, the first song should meet your energy level. Put the rest of the songs in order from most upbeat to slowest and calmest. By the time you reach your last song you will be relaxed and ready for sleep.

  • If possible, use surround sound- it's safer for your baby than putting loud headphones directly on your belly, which may also startle her . If surround sound isn’t possible (e.g. your partner is already snoring next to you) you can use earbuds at a lower volume than normal- one for you, one for your belly!

Listening to this music every night with the intention of connecting with your baby will condition you to associate these specific songs with that special loving bond. And, after hearing these songs every night for the final 3-4 months in your womb, baby will recognize this music with the same effect (think: Relaxing! Nurturing! Loving!) after birth. You can even continue to use this playlist during your baby's bedtime routine to signal that it is time to start relaxing before sleep!
